Similarweb, the analytics firm that tracks web and app traffic, posted on X that OpenAI’s chatbot reached 1.06 billion monthly active users in August. The company frames it as the fourth month in a row the tally has set a new high.
Similarweb does not measure ChatGPT’s user base directly. It estimates traffic from panel and clickstream data, then extrapolates a monthly active user count. OpenAI has not confirmed the 1.06 billion figure, and no independent auditor has verified it.
That distinction matters. Third-party estimates of a private company’s user numbers have missed badly before, and a monthly active user figure depends entirely on how the estimator defines “active.” Similarweb’s post did not specify its definition.
A billion monthly users would place ChatGPT among a small handful of consumer products at that scale, which is exactly why an unverified estimate circulates this fast. Treat the number as a directional signal, not a confirmed metric, until OpenAI or an independent auditor publishes its own count.
