One account on X says OpenAI is preparing to let its image generator produce animated GIFs. Token Gremlin (on X) posted on 3 November 2026 that the feature has been merged into the Codex code, where it sits behind a flag named image_generation_animation. OpenAI has not announced it, and the post is the only evidence offered, so treat it as a sighting from a single source.

According to the post, a user would choose how many frames an animation has and how long each one stays on screen. The account also says a spritesheet, a single image holding a grid of animation frames, can be converted into a GIF. Token Gremlin adds that OpenAI’s Images API generates the animation, with Codex only calling it, and concludes that ChatGPT will get the feature too. That conclusion is the account’s own reading of the code.

If it ships, the API route matters most to developers. Game makers and app builders could script small animated assets without a separate video tool. Anyone building on OpenAI’s image endpoint should watch its changelog for new frame and timing settings before planning around this.
