OpenAI is folding the Chat and Work tabs in ChatGPT into one screen, TechCrunch reported on 2 November, citing an email to users. A select group gets it first, with feedback before a wider rollout.

The desktop app has been a maze: ChatGPT and Codex sit side by side, and ChatGPT is split again into Chat and Work. OpenAI’s email pitches the merged tab as a place to start with an idea and let ChatGPT finish the job. Users bring files and plugins, then have it build a website, put together a presentation, or handle tasks on the web while they review. Codex stays a separate experience.

The sharper change is billing. ChatGPT and Codex will now draw from the same allowance pool, so a long coding session eats into the budget for everyday chat. OpenAI says most users will not notice, but depending on the model and how much they use, some will wait for resets more often.

TechCrunch adds that Anthropic made the same kind of consolidation for Claude in September, joining its chat and Cowork modes. Heavy Codex users should watch how fast their allowance drains once the shared pool arrives.
