Adam Fry, who runs OpenAI’s ChatGPT consumer product, told Big Technology’s Alex Kantrowitz on Monday night that ChatGPT now sees roughly one-fifth of the search-style queries Google does. OpenAI invited guests to a dinner in New York, where the chat happened.

Fry said weekly active users reached 1.2 billion, up from 1 billion about two months earlier. Voice, counting dictation and spoken conversation together, reaches 250 million people a week, and users make 1.5 billion images weekly. OpenAI supplied every figure; Google is not cited.

The search number depends on a definition. Fry said it covers anything a person once took to a traditional search engine: looking up a person or a place, or asking finance and health questions where the answer must be current. Kantrowitz asked whether each message in a long chat counts as a query; the excerpt Big Technology published ends before Fry answers.

Kantrowitz also put Bing’s market share at around 5 percent and asked whether that makes ChatGPT several times larger. Fry answered with user growth instead.

For any business that lives on search traffic, a fifth of Google’s volume in under two years is worth a line in the referral report.
