OpenAI is buying Pierre Computer, a small developer-tools startup whose technology already runs inside Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, according to an Axios exclusive by Madison Mills. OpenAI plans to fold Pierre’s Code Storage product into Codex. Terms were not disclosed, and the open-source work Pierre has released will remain public.

The target is GitHub, the Microsoft-owned home for much of the world’s software. Axios notes that GitHub has suffered reliability problems and outages as AI programming took off, and that critics call a service built for human programmers a poor fit when machines write so much of the code. In August, Cursor (which Elon Musk’s SpaceX now owns) launched a rival called Origin. Last month, Thomas Dohmke, GitHub’s former chief executive, unveiled a competitor of his own.

OpenAI’s position is awkward, since Microsoft holds close to a quarter of the company. Axios describes the two as rivals in several areas too.

Controlling where code gets stored, checked, and released would give OpenAI far more than a writing tool. Companies with their repositories on GitHub should expect Codex to arrive in their inbox as the alternative.
