OpenAI has started letting some ChatGPT subscribers talk to their Dot agents the way they talk to friends, through the phone’s built-in messaging app. Engadget reported on 28 October 2026 that a preview is rolling out to US Pro users, working over iMessage on iPhone and RCS on Android.

Users can send a Dot written messages, photos or voice memos, and the agent can open a conversation itself to report on tasks it was given. OpenAI says Linq supplies the messaging layer and that it ran “extensive” penetration testing. Whatever a Dot saves to memory is shared between ChatGPT and text threads, so context follows you from one to the other.

The timing is competitive. Engadget’s Igor Bonifacic notes that Anthropic entered personal agents last week with Claude Duet, which sits behind a US-only waitlist, and that Anthropic plans to include it in its $20 monthly Pro plan. Dots stay closed to Plus subscribers.

Anyone choosing between the two should compare the price of entry first: one is gated by a waitlist, the other by a higher subscription tier.
