OpenAI has published documentation describing an import flow that lets the ChatGPT desktop app and Codex CLI pull configuration from competing coding agents. Per the documentation, the desktop app can import instructions, settings, skills, plugins, projects and recent chats from Claude Code, Claude Cowork, or Cursor. Codex CLI supports imports only from Claude Code or Cursor, capped at 50 chats from the last 30 days.
Imported items map to specific destinations. Instruction files become AGENTS.md, skills and slash commands land as Codex skills, MCP server settings carry over into Codex’s MCP configuration, and Claude Code subagents convert into Codex agents. Users can turn on automatic updates to keep imported material synced with the original tool, and OpenAI says the process leaves existing setup unchanged.
This is a switching-cost argument as much as a feature. Making it painless to bring skills and project memory over from Claude Code or Cursor lowers the friction that otherwise locks developers into one agent ecosystem, right as OpenAI competes for that same coding-agent workflow.
