OpenAI shipped a Linux preview of its ChatGPT desktop application this week, closing the gap left after macOS and Windows versions launched in July, according to The Decoder. The release packages ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, together in one download, with .deb and .rpm installers for Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, on both x64 and ARM64 hardware. Voice control ships from day one, as does the bundled browser with support for Chrome extensions.
The app still cannot operate other desktop software. OpenAI said its Appshots feature, session record-and-replay, and voice commands for outside applications will not work at launch. Terminal users already had Codex CLI running on Linux before this release; the new app mainly adds a visual dashboard for tracking projects and code changes.
Linux is where a large share of the developer audience works, and OpenAI shipping there last says something about who the desktop app was built for first.
