Anthropic has merged chat and its Cowork agent into a single Claude for Enterprise customers, the company announced on claude.com. Pro and Max subscribers got the same setup in September.

Every conversation starts as chat. When a request needs code or file work, Claude carries on in an Anthropic-run cloud session and returns a finished document, analysis, or deck, even if the user has closed their laptop. Each session gets a separate sandboxed virtual machine, and outbound network access is off by default on Enterprise.

Billing stays usage-based, and Anthropic concedes that agentic work can burn more tokens than a quick question. Admins get four levers: a new Efficient mode that holds the experience to Sonnet and Haiku models, model access by role, spend caps for the whole organization, a group, or one person, plus pooled monthly budgets for groups. Anthropic says running Claude Opus 5.5 is 40% cheaper than Opus 5 on typical workloads. That comparison comes from the company itself.

Customers on HIPAA-ready setups, self-managed encryption keys, or Claude Code under zero data retention stay put. The most regulated buyers are the ones who cannot use the cloud-run version yet.
