Elon Musk has given a one-line reason for the tighter caps on Grok Bot. Answering Doge Norway, a Dogecoin fan account, on X, he wrote: “The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue”.

That is the whole explanation. The post names no figure for what the bot costs to run, none for what it earns, and does not say what the new limits are or whom they affect. Anyone hoping to size the gap will have to wait for numbers xAI has not published.

At last count the reply had passed 10 million views, with 17,498 likes and 3,911 replies, so users clearly care where the ceiling now sits. It is also a rare case of a chatbot’s owner saying in public that the unit economics of free or cheap access did not work.

For anyone who built a workflow on Grok Bot’s old allowance, the safe move is to assume the new cap is lower than the old one and to test it before the next deadline.
