Axios reported that Luke Metz has taken a new role at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, citing a person with direct knowledge of the hire who was not authorized to discuss it publicly. Metz previously departed OpenAI to join Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines back in 2024, then returned to OpenAI only months ago, making this his third lab in roughly two years.
At Meta, Metz answers directly to Alexandr Wang, who now leads the company’s overall AI push. The hire extends a recruiting run that started once Meta struck its multibillion dollar arrangement with Scale AI, the deal that brought Wang over as the startup’s former chief executive.

Metz’s path traces a wider pattern of researchers cycling among OpenAI, Thinking Machines, and Meta as each lab bids for scarce technical staff. Meta has rolled out several new models lately, and adding Metz points to Wang wanting his team resourced to sustain that release pace.
