xAI has released grok-build-0.1 as a public beta API, attaching a pricing tier of $1 per million input tokens and $2 per million output tokens. The announcement follows AI Insiders’ May 27 coverage of the Grok Build CLI, which shipped bundled with SuperGrok and X Premium Plus subscriptions. The API release is the move that matters for builders: it decouples the model from xAI’s consumer products and puts it into any pipeline.
The model processes over 100 tokens per second, a throughput claim that matters for terminal-driven coding loops where latency compounds across many small calls. xAI is targeting IDE-embedded workflows directly, with confirmed integrations for Cursor and OpenClaw, both platforms where Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.6 and OpenAI’s Codex currently sit.
At $1 in / $2 out, grok-build-0.1 is priced below GPT-5 mini and Gemini 3 Pro on a per-token basis for coding tasks, according to the xAI release. Independent benchmark results are not included in the announcement. Builders evaluating agentic coding pipelines should run their own evals before committing; cost advantage without quality parity is not a real advantage.
