Runway, the AI video company, says it is testing a robot-control model called Praxis-1 with early partners and plans to release it publicly, with open weights, in the coming months.
Runway calls Praxis-1 a world action model: software that studies a scene and decides what a robot’s body should do next. The company’s pitch is that robot training data is scarce and costly to gather, while video of everyday life is plentiful. Runway says the model builds on the same video pretraining behind its general world models, and that robot performance improves as the amount of third-person video grows.
Per Runway’s announcement, three robotics companies (Ultra, Standard Bots and Noble Machines) have Praxis-1 installed on machines they operate themselves. The company says the trials are meant to check both effectiveness and safety across different robot types before any general release. The demo clips are Runway’s own, and the post offers no independent results.
For robot makers, open weights would mean adapting Praxis-1 locally instead of renting a closed system. Until it ships and outsiders can test it, that remains a plan, not a product.
