Moonshot AI is temporarily closing new sign-ups for Kimi K3, its 2.8-trillion-parameter model whose open-weight release is due July 27. The company said on X that uptake over the past two days pushed usage near the ceiling of its available GPU capacity, and it is now reserving that compute for people who already hold a subscription.
Existing subscribers keep full access, Moonshot said; the freeze applies only to new sign-ups, which will reopen in waves as additional capacity comes online.
Moonshot also plans to split its membership tiers going forward, separating a general Kimi plan covering web, app, and work use from a dedicated Kimi Code plan for developers running coding workloads. The company framed the change as a way to allocate GPUs by workload rather than treat every user the same.
A capacity pause is the clearest demand signal an open-weight lab can send, and it arrives one week before Moonshot ships the K3 weights publicly. If demand holds through the July 27 release, expect the same GPU crunch to hit self-hosted deployment support and API pricing.
