AI Social Media Managers, Scored: The Cheap Ones Include the AI

The best AI social media manager depends on what you want automated: Buffer for solo creators, Publer for value, Metricool for analytics, Predis.ai for generated creatives, FeedHive for automation, Vista Social for agencies, and Hootsuite or Sprout Social for enterprise teams. Buffer’s free plan includes its AI assistant; Sprout Social’s $199-per-seat plan does not include AI post writing, which starts at $299 per seat per month (verified Aug 5, 2026).

Updated August 2026. Every price here was read off the vendor’s own pricing page. All eight were confirmed together on August 5, 2026, and seven of the eight were opened again on August 6 with nothing moved.

Scores are our judgment on documented evidence, not a benchmark.

Every stamp on this page reads August 5, 2026, because that is the day all eight pricing pages were open at once and not one figure had moved. Seven of them were checked a third time on August 6 and still hadn’t; Vista Social was not, so the whole page keeps the older, safer date. Where a vendor contradicts itself, we print the contradiction instead of picking the flattering half.

The AI gets stingier as the price goes up

In this category, the cheaper the tool, the more freely it hands over its AI.

Buffer’s free plan, three channels and no card, includes the AI Assistant with what its own feature table calls unlimited credits. Metricool’s free plan lists an AI assistant too. FeedHive gives you 2,500 credits on a €15 tier. The pattern holds outside our eight: SocialBee, which we haven’t scored, prints “unlimited AI content generation” on all three of its standard tiers, the cheapest of which is $29 a month (verified Aug 6, 2026).

Now climb. Sprout Social’s $199-per-seat Standard plan buys unlimited AI-generated alt text and nothing else AI-shaped. Enhance Post by AI Assist appears first on Professional at $299 per seat; Enhance Reply on Advanced at $399 (all verified Aug 5, 2026). A three-person team pays $10,764 a year for the tier that rewrites a caption.

Hootsuite is the exception up there: its Wisdom AI ships in every plan, and the entry plan is $99 per user per month (verified Aug 5, 2026).

So the question isn’t which tool has AI. They all do. It’s whether you’re buying AI, or buying approval workflows, seat governance and listening, with AI handed over as the sweetener.

How we scored these AI social media tools (and what we didn’t do)

We don’t run eight social suites for a living, and we haven’t published a month of a client’s calendar through each one. Pages that imply otherwise are why this category is so hard to shop.

Here is the whole method. All eight vendors’ pricing pages were opened on July 30 and again on August 5, 2026, and seven of them a third time on August 6, with every tier, limit and add-on recorded exactly as displayed. AI allowances were compared tier by tier, and each vendor’s own credit arithmetic checked against its own credit table. Then we logged who Google cites for the head query and read the 113-comment Reddit thread its AI Overview leans on.

One limit worth stating: those pages come to us as extracted text, not as pixels. A banner that renders late can go missing, which is why one Predis.ai promotion below is recorded as unconfirmed rather than ended. We won’t tell you an offer expired on the strength of not having seen it.

Two vendors contradicted themselves on their own pricing pages while we read. One of them managed it three times. All of it is named below.

Ratings are ours, no vendor saw a draft, and no affiliate links appear here.

Best for solo creators: Buffer

Buffer wins the entry level on its pricing model, not its features. You pay per connected channel: $5 a month on Essentials, $10 on Team (verified Aug 5, 2026). A freelancer with one Instagram account pays $5, and stops paying the day a client leaves.

The free plan is unusually honest: three channels, ten scheduled posts per channel that refill as they publish, 30 days of insights, and the AI Assistant with unlimited credits (verified Aug 5, 2026). AI replies are capped at five a week until you pay. Buffer also publishes a machine-readable /pricing.md “for AI agents”.

Skip it if you need social listening or a real approval chain. The community inbox handles comments, not brand monitoring, and branded reports need Team.

Best for analytics on a small budget: Metricool

Metricool gives away the expensive half. Its free plan tracks five competitor profiles; Starter, from $20 a month, tracks 100 and adds unlimited analytics history (verified Aug 5, 2026). Nothing else at that price benchmarks you against a hundred rivals.

It scales by brands, not channels: $20 for five, $53 for fifteen, $159 for fifty (verified Aug 5, 2026). The AI assistant is credit-metered per brand per month, and here Metricool trips over its own table: it prints three allowances, 5, 20 and 35 credits, across four plan columns. Which tier buys which number can’t be read off the page, so we’re not going to name one for them. Two catches you can be sure of: X costs $10 a month per connected account, and the free plan carries neither LinkedIn nor X.

Skip it if X is central to your work. A per-network surcharge on a tool this cheap defeats the point; Publer includes X on a $5 plan.

Best value: Publer

Publer is the price floor with the fewest asterisks: $5.00 a month for Professional, $4.00 paid yearly, with unlimited scheduling, unlimited drafts, unlimited workspaces and X included. Business at $10.00 adds analytics reports, competitor analysis, best-times-to-post and Spintax post recycling (verified Aug 5, 2026).

The free tier is real and slightly annoying: three accounts, ten scheduled posts each, 25 drafts, and a 24-hour post history, so your published archive evaporates daily. X is excluded from free, and Publer blames the cost of X’s enterprise API on the page rather than hiding it.

Skip it if the AI is why you’re buying. Unlimited AI prompts sit on Business at $10; the $5 Professional tier doesn’t list AI prompts at all.

Best for agencies: Vista Social

Vista Social is shaped like agency work: 15 profiles and two users at $64 a month billed yearly, 30 profiles and four users at $120, then Scale at $304 for 70 profiles, eight users and white-labelled reports with client-connect links. Month to month costs $79, $149 and $349 (verified Aug 5, 2026).

It also contradicts itself three times on that one page, and we list all three, because all three are numbers you’d be quoted in a sales call. The Scale card promises “Unlimited AI credits” while the table below says 3,500 a month. The FAQ says Professional includes three users and Advanced six; the cards and the table both say two and four. And the Scale card announces “8 Users” in its headline, then tells you four bullets later that you can invite up to ten.

Three contradictions, one pricing page, all of them still live on August 5, 2026. Get the numbers in writing before you sign.

Skip it if you manage one brand. A solo operator gets the same publishing for $5 at Publer.

Best for automation: FeedHive

FeedHive treats posting as a programmable system: post conditions, workflows, webhooks, first-comment automation, a REST API, CLI access and, on this pricing page, an OpenClaw skill and a Claude Code setup. Creator is €15 a month for four accounts, 2,500 AI credits and 500 automation runs; Business €69 for 100 accounts; Agency €239 for 500 (verified Aug 5, 2026).

If the plan is to have an assistant file posts for you rather than click a calendar, this is the only tool here whose pricing page assumes it.

Skip it if you need reporting. FeedHive’s complete feature list runs from scheduling to webhooks to CLI access without a single analytics or reporting row in it (checked Aug 5, 2026). You’ll also need to be comfortable paying in euros: there’s no dollar toggle on that page, only monthly and yearly.

Best for generating the creative: Predis.ai

Everything else here schedules content you made. Predis.ai makes it: carousels, reels, memes, product video from a store feed, ad creatives and captions, plus publishing to ten channels. Core is $19 a month billed annually ($230 a year against a $32 list price), Rise $40, Enterprise+ $212 (verified Aug 5, 2026).

Check the credit maths, because the card flatters itself in exactly one place. Core’s 1,300 credits are advertised as roughly 86 images and nine videos. The image number is honest: the same page charges 15 credits an image, and 1,300 divided by 15 comes to 86.7.

Now run the video number through that same table. A standard video costs 200 credits per eight seconds, so 1,300 credits buys six and a half clips, not nine. Predis can clearly do its own arithmetic. It just didn’t do it twice.

Skip it if you have a designer, or a brand system you care about. Generated creative is fast, and looks generated.

Best for enterprise listening: Hootsuite

Hootsuite now sells itself as five named products: Perch for publishing, Nest for the inbox, Lumen for listening, Parliament for advocacy, and Wisdom, the AI, running under all of them. Every plan gets Wisdom, which at this end of the market is unusual. Standard is $99 per user per month, Professional $199, Advanced $399, all on annual billing (verified Aug 5, 2026).

One detail shows how fast this moves. Google’s AI Overview still credits Hootsuite’s OwlyWriter AI. That name appears nowhere on the plans page we read.

Skip it if you’re under about five people. Standard is ten accounts at $99 per user: the same publishing you get for $5 at Publer, plus listening you won’t have the headcount to act on.

Best for enterprise reporting: Sprout Social

Sprout has the deepest reporting and governance stack here and prices accordingly: Essentials $79 per seat per month on annual billing ($99 month to month), Standard $199, Professional $299, Advanced $399. Premium Analytics and Listening are paid add-ons from Standard up (verified Aug 5, 2026).

It ranks last on fit, not quality. Sprout is the only tool here where the AI arrives late and costs the most: alt text at $199, post enhancement at $299, reply enhancement at $399, per seat, every month (verified Aug 5, 2026).

Skip it if AI writing is the justification, or your team is under about ten seats. Per-seat pricing at $199 assumes a social department, not a social person.

What Reddit actually says, and who’s selling in the thread

Google’s AI Overview here cites one Reddit thread: What’s the BEST AI Tool You’re Using Right Now for Social Media + Video Content Creation? in r/aipromptprogramming, posted 20 July 2025, 113 comments (read Jul 30, 2026).

The most-upvoted substantive answer names none of the eight tools above. It picks Planable for keeping social on brand, CapCut or OpusClip for captioning video, Canva Magic Studio for visuals. The most detailed answer is blunter: “we struggled to find single ‘do-it-all’ AI tool that makes brand-ready videos and social posts automatically,” and the one-click products “look pretty generic or off for our brand.” Its stack runs about $25 a month: ChatGPT, Gamma, ElevenLabs, Suno and DaVinci Resolve.

Read it with your guard up. One commenter opens with “im the founder of a social media management tool called PostPlanify”. Another signs off “Cofounder here.” One tool gets recommended twice by different accounts in near-identical marketing cadence. The original poster replies five times steering readers to his bio link. This is what Google hands you as community consensus in a category where advertisers pay $17 to $24 a click.

In 113 comments, nobody claims one tool does all of it.

Where Google’s AI Overview has this wrong

Search “ai social media manager” and Google builds you a four-row pricing table. Two of those rows are wrong, and we checked them against the vendors’ own pages on August 5, 2026.

It lists Sprout Social at “From $199/user/month.” Sprout’s pricing page opens at $79 per seat per month on annual billing (verified Aug 5, 2026) — there’s an entire Essentials tier the summary doesn’t know exists. It gives SocialBee’s price as “Free trial available,” which is not a price; SocialBee publishes $29, $49 and $99 tiers on a page anyone can load (verified Aug 5, 2026). The Buffer and Predis.ai rows are right.

The reference pool explains the errors. Ten sources sit behind that Overview. One is an independent ranking (Zapier), one is a small agency blog, and the other eight are pages published by tool vendors, among them SocialBee, monday.com, Sprout Social and MindStudio. The organic top eight has the same shape: Reddit at one, Zapier at two, then Ocoya, SocialBee, monday, Sprout Social, Meta and MindStudio.

So a category worth $20 a click is described, almost end to end, by the companies selling into it. Google’s summary inherits their framing and their stale numbers along with it. A vendor has no reason to mention that its rival opens at $79.

An AI social media manager and a post generator are different purchases

More people go looking for an AI social media post generator than for an AI social media manager. Most listicles sell them the same eight tools anyway.

A post generator makes the asset. Predis.ai is the one here, turning a prompt or a product page into a carousel, a reel or an ad creative. Buffer, Publer and Metricool have caption assistants; none of them will make you the video.

An AI social media manager runs the calendar instead: schedules, tailors each post per network, replies in an inbox, reports, and in FeedHive’s case fires conditional automations off a webhook. That’s what the other seven sell.

You can also run the pair for nothing. Canva or ChatGPT makes the creative, Buffer’s or Publer’s free tier publishes it, and you keep the $19 you’d have spent on a generator until you actually need the volume. For clips, see our Opus Clip alternatives; for avatar video, HeyGen alternatives.

FAQ

What are AI social media tools?

AI social media tools are publishing and analytics platforms with generative features attached: caption and image writing, reply drafting, best-time prediction, competitor analysis and automated reporting. A few, like Predis.ai, generate the creative itself. Most, like Buffer and Hootsuite, bolt AI onto a scheduling workflow.

What is the best AI tool for social media in 2026?

It depends on the job. Buffer for solo creators who want AI on a free plan, Metricool for competitor analytics on a small budget, Publer for the cheapest paid tier, Vista Social for agency rosters, FeedHive for automation, Predis.ai for creative, Hootsuite for listening with AI in every tier, Sprout Social for enterprise reporting.

Is there a genuinely free AI social media tool?

Yes, two. Buffer’s free plan covers three channels with the AI Assistant included; Metricool’s covers one brand, 20 posts a month and an AI assistant (both verified Aug 5, 2026). Publer’s free tier is real too, but excludes X and keeps only 24 hours of post history.

How much do AI social media tools cost?

From nothing to $399 per seat per month. Buffer and Publer start at $5, Predis.ai at $19, Metricool at $20, FeedHive at €15, Vista Social at $64, Hootsuite at $99 per user and Sprout Social at $79 per seat (all verified Aug 5, 2026). X and listening cost extra.

Which AI social media tool has the best free plan?

Buffer’s, for what it doesn’t withhold: three channels, unlimited AI Assistant credits, insights, API access and a community inbox, no card required. Metricool’s free plan wins on analytics instead, tracking five competitor profiles, but it caps you at 20 posts a month and excludes LinkedIn.

Can AI actually manage social media on its own?

Not yet, on this evidence. Across 113 comments in the Reddit thread Google cites here, nobody claimed one tool handled creative, publishing and engagement end to end, and the most detailed reply said all-in-one products produce generic output. A generator plus a scheduler is the realistic setup.

Changelog

  • 2026-08-06 — QA pass, second of the day. One method claim was wrong and is gone: this page said it recorded limits “including the ones that only render in a browser,” which our text extraction cannot honestly claim. The method section now states the limit outright and explains why one Predis.ai promotion is logged as unconfirmed rather than expired. The verification history was brought up to date — all eight prices confirmed together on August 5, seven of them again on August 6, and the page keeps the older date because Vista Social was not among the seven. SocialBee’s “unlimited AI content generation” on its $29 tier was added to the section on AI rationing as outside-the-set corroboration, labelled as unscored. Hootsuite had been dropped from the FAQ’s best-for list while appearing in the opening answer; it is back. No price, score, quote or anti-pick was altered.
  • 2026-08-06 — Independent audit, no reader-facing change. A second writer was briefed to build this hub from scratch, set its keyword targets without sight of this page, and arrived at the same primary term and the same figures: “ai social media manager”, 720 a month, difficulty 42, $20.01 a click. Seven of the eight vendors’ pricing pages were re-opened a day on and every price here was unchanged; Vista Social was not re-fetched and keeps its August 5 stamp. The r/SaaS founder thread that was consulted but not cited on August 5 was fetched in full and its quotes verified, so it is now ready to be added at the next refresh alongside the thread Google cites, not in place of it. Two coverage gaps were logged rather than papered over: Postiz, the category’s open-source option, is absent from this page, and SocialBee is still named but unscored despite being one of only two tools here that don’t ration AI by the credit. No price, score, quote or anti-pick was altered.
  • 2026-08-05 — Keyword retarget and price re-verification. The July 30 build set its target from Ubersuggest’s suggestion endpoint after the overview endpoint hit its daily quota, and flagged that as a pre-publish blocker; the real endpoint was run this pass and the flag is cleared. It changed the answer: difficulty scores on the old target’s synonym cluster were understated by two to five times, with “best ai tools for social media” reading 82 against the 16 recorded. The page is retargeted from “ai social media tools” (110/mo) to “ai social media manager” (720/mo, SD 42, $20.01 CPC), which altered the title, H1, meta description and opening sentence and nothing else. Six of the eight prices — Buffer, Publer, FeedHive, Predis.ai, Hootsuite and Sprout Social — were re-read on the vendors’ own pages and were unchanged. New section added correcting two errors in Google’s AI Overview for the new target term, both checked against vendor pages the same day. No score or quote was changed.
  • 2026-08-05 — Edit pass, same day. All eight pricing pages were opened again, including Metricool and Vista Social, which the earlier pass had left on a July 30 stamp; nothing had moved, and the page now carries one verification date instead of two. Four corrections came out of the re-read. Hootsuite’s plan cards rendered this time and confirm the FAQ figures and the ten-account Standard limit, so that caveat is closed. A third Vista Social self-contradiction was found and added — the Scale card says eight users in its headline and ten in a bullet on the same card. Metricool’s AI-credit allowance no longer names a tier, because its own feature table prints three numbers across four plan columns and cannot be read unambiguously. FeedHive’s anti-pick was wrong and is rewritten: FeedHive does ship a social inbox; what it has no trace of is analytics or reporting. Predis.ai’s credit maths was tightened to six and a half eight-second videos, with the image figure shown to be exact.
  • 2026-07-30 — Page created. All eight prices read live on the vendor’s own pricing page; Hootsuite’s come from the FAQ on its plans page, because the cards render client-side. Two Vista Social self-contradictions recorded, and Predis.ai’s advertised “~9 videos” checked against its own credit table. SERP logged for “best ai social media tools”: the AI Overview fires with 12 references, Zapier holds organic #1, Reddit #2, and no independent ranked comparison sits in the top five. Reddit thread read in full.

Independent, no paid placements. Every price is checked on the vendor’s own site and date-stamped, and we publish who should skip each tool.
