Retell AI Review: What $0.07 a Minute Actually Buys

Retell AI is worth it if you want a production phone agent live in an afternoon and your calls stay inside the US and Canada; skip it if you dial internationally, need a HIPAA BAA without an enterprise contract, or want packet-level control over the voice pipeline. Its real production cost is closer to $0.13 a minute than the $0.07 on the tin (verified July 29, 2026).

This Retell AI review is consensus-scored and document-verified, not first-hand-tested. On July 29, 2026 we priced every component live on Retell’s own pricing page, did the same for Vapi, Bland, Synthflow and ElevenLabs Agents, read the Trustpilot record and three Reddit threads end to end, and pulled Retell’s own support forum. Where we haven’t run the product ourselves we say so, and we mark what still needs a screenshot.

Our verdict: 8.0 / 10. Updated July 2026.

The verdict box

Rating8.0 / 10
One-line verdictThe fastest route from signup to a working phone agent, at roughly double the advertised floor once you price a build anyone would actually ship.
Price (verified Jul 29, 2026)Pay-as-you-go, $0 platform fee, $10 free credits. $0.07–$0.31/min quoted; ~$0.13/min for a typical production build. Enterprise: custom.
Best forAgencies and small product teams shipping US/Canada inbound agents — receptionists, lead qualification, appointment setting — who want to bill clients per minute.
ANTI-PICK — do not buy ifYou dial outside Retell’s whitelisted countries; you need HIPAA/BAA without talking to sales; you want granular control over latency and turn-taking (take Vapi); or you want a finished AI receptionist rather than a platform to build one on.

Retell AI pricing (verified July 29, 2026)

There are no tiers. Retell charges $0 upfront, hands you $10 in credits, and bills the minutes — which is genuinely rare in a category where Synthflow now starts enterprise contracts at $30,000 a year (verified Jul 29, 2026).

The headline is “$0.07–$0.31 / min for AI Voice Agents.” That range is real, but it hides which end you’ll land on. Retell publishes every component separately, so here is the arithmetic:

ComponentCheapest published optionTypical production choice
Retell voice infra$0.055/min (fixed)$0.055/min
LLMGPT 5 nano, $0.003/minGPT 4.1, $0.045/min
Text-to-speechRetell/Cartesia/Fish voices, $0.015/min$0.015/min (ElevenLabs voices cost $0.040)
Telephony$0 with your own SIP trunk$0.015/min (Twilio US)
Total$0.073/min≈ $0.13/min

So the $0.07 floor is honest arithmetic on the vendor’s own table. It just assumes you run a nano-class model and bring your own trunk. Retell’s own cost calculator agrees: set it to GPT 4.1, Retell’s platform voices and custom telephony and it returns $0.115/min before you attach a phone number (verified Jul 29, 2026). Add a Twilio US line and you’re at $0.13. At 3,000 minutes a month that’s about $390, plus $2 for the number.

A buyer on r/AI_Agents budgeting the same 3,000-minute workload — inbound support, GPT-4o mini, ElevenLabs or Cartesia voices — estimated Retell at ”~$275–320/mo (super transparent, low-code, live in minutes)” against Vapi at ”~$370–500+/mo (feels unpredictable with add-ons)” (r/AI_Agents). Those were his pre-purchase estimates, not a bill he paid, and he was shopping a cheaper model than ours — but the order of magnitude holds.

Four line items nobody mentions in the roundups, all verified on the pricing page:

  • You are billed during silence and hold. Retell’s own FAQ says it without flinching: “Billing covers the entire duration of the call because the speech-to-text engine remains active and listening throughout, even during silence” (verified Jul 29, 2026). Long hold times are real money.
  • Concurrency is metered. Twenty concurrent calls are free; every one after that is $8/concurrency/month. A busy Monday morning is a billing event.
  • Add-ons stack per minute. Knowledge base +$0.005, denoising +$0.005, guardrails +$0.005, PII removal +$0.01, AI quality assurance $0.10/min after the first 100 minutes free. Turn on four of those and you’ve added a third to your floor.
  • Knowledge bases are also a monthly line. Ten are free, then $8 per knowledge base per month — easy to miss if you spin one up per client.

Some of it cuts the other way, and it’s worth saying so. Billing is tracked to the second with no per-call rounding. Calls that fail to connect aren’t billed at all. When a call transfers to a human, the agent fee stops and only telephony keeps running. All three are better than the category norm.

What Retell actually does well

Time to a live agent. ✔️ This is the thing every reviewer converges on, including people who left. A Trustpilot reviewer who migrated from a competitor wrote that the old setup was “a full week of typing testing typing” while “with Retell AI it was 10 minutes to have an active bot doing exactly what I needed” (verified Jul 29, 2026).

Model portability. ✔️ You can swap between GPT 5.5, Claude 4.6 Sonnet, Gemini 3.5 Flash and a dozen others from a dropdown, and each one’s per-minute cost is published. When a cheaper model gets good enough, you move and your margin improves the same day. Most competitors either lock the model or make you supply keys.

Reliability over months, not demos. ✔️ The most credible praise comes from people running client work for a year or more. One Trustpilot reviewer: “I’m running now way over a year Voice AI agents for Clients, without any problems” (verified Jul 29, 2026). A Redditor who evaluated LiveKit against Retell concluded: “I stuck with Retell AI because the developer tax is so much lower… Unless you have a team dedicated to VoIP ops, the managed route pays for itself just in maintenance time saved” (r/AI_Agents).

No feature gating. ✔️ Batch calling, post-call analysis, simulation testing, webhooks and the full API are all on the free-to-start plan — batch calling still meters at +$0.005 a dial, but nothing is locked behind a tier. Vapi, by comparison, sells HIPAA as a $2,000/month add-on and zero-data-retention at $1,000/month (verified Jul 29, 2026).

Where Retell falls short

That 4.9 Trustpilot score needs an asterisk — and this is the criticism nobody else prints. Retell holds 4.9 across 816 reviews, 94% of them five-star, with 806 arriving in the last twelve months (verified Jul 29, 2026). Trustpilot flags the profile “Asks customers to review” and “Hasn’t replied to negative reviews.” Meanwhile Retell’s own support forum carries a run of threads from January through April 2026 with titles like “Trustpilot Review Submitted – Request for $30 Retell Credit” and “$30 Review Bonus? Where do I claim it?” (community.retellai.com). A Retell team member answers one of them not by denying the programme but by apologising for the delay — “The credit process may take a little time, especially during holidays” — and asking for the user’s organisation ID. Trustpilot’s own policy text, printed on the same page as the score, reads: “Offering incentives for reviews or asking for them selectively can bias the TrustScore, which goes against our guidelines.”

It gets worse for the label system. Trustpilot marks a review “Unprompted” when the reviewer came on their own — the tag readers use as the honest signal. On March 24, 2026 a reviewer named Rhea Alvaro posted a detailed, Unprompted-labelled review of Retell. A thread on Retell’s own forum titled “Request for $30 Retell Credit” reads, in part: “Retell AI fue reseñada por Rhea Alvaro el 3/24/2026” (community.retellai.com). Same name, same date, asking for the credit. We can’t prove the two accounts are one person, but the match is exact, and it means “Unprompted” doesn’t reliably mean uncompensated here either. Read the 4.9 as a marketing asset, not an independent signal.

One user in the first thread also wrote that they had submitted “about five time or more,” never received credits, and that “when I did give it a lower rating it just disappeared.” That last part is an allegation we could not verify, and the Retell staffer replied asking for the org ID rather than dismissing it.

The split is stark once you read the labels. ❌ Every “Invited” review on the pages we read was positive. All of them. Every critical review was Unprompted, and those complaints cluster on two things: slow support, and latency.

Latency, specifically. ❌ The Rhea Alvaro review — the one above — otherwise recommends the product and still reports that on Gemini 3 Flash “the response time can sometimes delay between 1.5 and 2.5 seconds.” A second reviewer wrote that “the latency of the model didnt support fast paced conversations” and that support “was rather slow” (both verified Jul 29, 2026). Retell’s marketing sells natural conversation. On some model choices it isn’t there yet, and Retell does not publish per-model latency figures for you to check before you commit.

The freshest complaint on the file is from July 8, 2026: batch calling not placing outbound calls, and “no Support no one here to help after making paytimg” (verified Jul 29, 2026). One angry review is not a pattern. Three weeks later it still carries no company reply, on a profile Trustpilot has flagged “Hasn’t replied to negative reviews” — that part is a pattern.

The country whitelist is undocumented and it will bite you. ❌ An unprompted March 2026 reviewer hit SIP status code 403 — telephony_provider_permission_denied with the message that dialled countries were “not included in whitelisted countries USA, CAN” — after buying a dedicated Telnyx number specifically for the route. Nothing on Retell’s pricing page warns you. If your calls leave North America, verify your destinations with support before you build anything.

Compliance is an enterprise conversation. ❌ HIPAA/BAA, SSO, custom data retention, role-based access and a dedicated server all sit on the Enterprise plan with custom pricing. A three-person healthcare startup cannot self-serve its way to a BAA here.

It is a platform, not a product. ❌ Retell gives you templates and an API, not a configured receptionist. A meaningful share of the ~9,900 monthly searches for “retell ai” comes from small-business owners who want the finished thing — they should be buying an AI receptionist service, not a builder.

Who should skip Retell AI

Skip it if you dial outside the US and Canada without confirming your routes first. Skip it if you need a signed BAA and can’t run an enterprise procurement.

Skip it if your agent has to juggle seven tools and branch on real business logic. The developer who moved to Vapi put it bluntly: for a proof of concept “Retell was fine. But the second I had to debug any real business logic, it became a complete bottleneck” (r/vapiai). Discount that as you see fit. He runs an agency that builds these systems and he posted it in Vapi’s own subreddit — it still matches what the other builders describe.

And skip it if you’re a restaurant owner who just wants the phone answered. Start with our AI customer service picks instead.

  • Choose Vapi if your agent is a real application. You trade setup time for control: one builder cut response delay from 0.6s to 0.4s by hand and called it “the difference between a caller hearing a clunky robot and a natural conversation starter.” A voice-AI consultant answering a platform-choice thread put the split in one line — “Retell is actually easier to get started with but lacks some of the deep customisation you can do with Vapi” (r/AI_Agents). He builds on Vapi commercially; the line is still the cleanest summary anyone has written.
  • Choose ElevenLabs Agents if you’re under ~275 minutes a month and voice quality is the product. $22/month buys 275 included minutes and $0.08 for each one after; Retell has no free minute allowance beyond the $10 credit.
  • Choose Bland if the component table is the thing you hate. One rate covers LLM, speech-to-text and text-to-speech, and it starts at $0.14/min with no platform fee — more than Retell’s floor, less arithmetic, and telephony still billed separately.
  • Choose Synthflow only if you were signing a five-figure contract anyway. Its self-serve tier is gone.
  • Skip the platform layer if you want an answered phone, not a build. See our AI phone agents guide for done-for-you options and our Sierra review for the enterprise end.

Why you can trust this Retell AI review

We hold no product in this category and take no placement money. We priced Retell component by component on its own pricing page, priced Vapi, Bland, Synthflow and ElevenLabs Agents the same day on theirs, read the Trustpilot profile including the incentive disclosure and the flags, pulled two threads from Retell’s own support forum, and read three Reddit threads in full. Every quote on this page links to the page it came from. Ratings are our judgment on that evidence. What we have not done is put twenty identical calls through Retell and Vapi and measure latency ourselves — that test and the billing screenshots are queued as artifacts, and this page will carry them before it’s final. Method lives on our how we test AI tools page; the no-paid-placement rules are in our independence charter.

Bottom line

Retell earns its reputation on the thing agencies actually get paid for: it puts a competent agent on a real phone line with less setup than anything else here, and it publishes what every minute costs instead of making you guess. That’s worth 8.0. Budget $0.13, not $0.07. Confirm your calling countries with support before you build a single flow. And ignore the 4.9 — Retell paid credits for those reviews, and its own forum is the receipt.

FAQ

How much does Retell AI actually cost per minute?

Retell publishes $0.07–$0.31 per minute (verified July 29, 2026). The floor assumes a nano-class model and your own SIP trunk. A normal build — GPT 4.1, Retell’s own voices, a Twilio US number — works out to about $0.13 a minute, roughly $390 for 3,000 monthly minutes, plus $2 for a phone number.

Is Retell AI better than Vapi?

For getting live fast, yes. For complex agents, no. Retell wins on setup speed, published per-component pricing and low maintenance; Vapi wins when you need granular control over latency, turn-taking and multi-tool workflows. Every builder we quoted split it the same way: Retell to ship, Vapi to engineer.

Why does Retell AI have a 4.9 Trustpilot rating?

Partly because the product is well liked, and partly because Retell ran a promotion paying $30–$50 in platform credits for Trustpilot reviews, documented across its own support forum in early 2026. Trustpilot’s guidelines say incentivised reviews can bias a TrustScore. Weight the unprompted reviews, which are markedly more critical.

Changelog

  • 2026-07-29 — Page created. Retell pay-as-you-go, component pricing, add-ons, monthly line items and billing FAQ verified live on retellai.com/pricing; Vapi, Bland, Synthflow and ElevenLabs Agents pricing verified the same day on their own pricing pages; Trustpilot profile (4.9 / 816, 94% five-star, 806 in the last 12 months, “Asks customers to review”, “Hasn’t replied to negative reviews”) read and verified live, quotes taken verbatim; review-for-credits promotion and the $30 credit-request threads verified on Retell’s own community forum; all three Reddit threads (r/AI_Agents ×2, r/vapiai) fetched in full and quoted from the fetched pages.
  • 2026-07-29 — QA pass. Bland AI pricing resolved from (verify) to $0.14/min (Start, $0 platform fee). The r/AI_Agents “easier to start with / deeper customisation” line upgraded from a SERP relay to a direct quote from the fetched thread. Trustpilot Invited/Unprompted claim corrected: the accurate direction is that every Invited review we read was positive and every critical review was Unprompted, not the reverse. Unused G2 rating and its source URL removed rather than carried unverified.
