Motion Review: The Best Auto-Scheduler Nobody Seems to Be Updating

Motion is worth it if deadline-aware auto-scheduling is your one real problem and you buy two or more seats annually at $19 a seat per month (verified July 29, 2026). Skip it if you’re buying alone on monthly billing, where one person pays $49 for the plan a two-person team gets at $29 a seat, or if you need refunds, an API, or a vendor whose own subreddit is asking whether anyone still works on the product.

This Motion review is consensus-scored and document-verified, not first-hand-tested. We pulled all eight prices off Motion’s own pricing page on July 29, 2026, read its terms and cancellation article line by line, and worked through four r/UseMotion threads comment by comment. Where we haven’t run a controlled test, we say so.

Is Motion worth it in 2026?

Conditionally, and the condition has gotten narrower.

What Motion does is genuinely hard. You dump in tasks with deadlines and durations, and it lays them onto your real calendar around your real meetings, then reshuffles when the day falls apart. Nothing else does deadline-aware auto-scheduling and project management with dependencies in one app. After years of dragging blocks around Google Calendar, the first week feels like someone hired you a chief of staff.

The problem is everything around that engine.

Start with the sales copy. Motion’s pricing page promises you’ll “Finish 137% more work” and its homepage says the AI is “over 90% accurate out of the box” (both read live on Jul 29, 2026). Neither carries a published methodology, a sample size, or a link to a study. Treat both as marketing until Motion shows the work.

The same pricing page tells you the trial is “Risk free. Cancel anytime.” Motion’s own help centre says: “Purchases are non-refundable; Motion is not obligated to refund any payments, but may do so at its sole discretion.” Both sentences were live on July 29, 2026, roughly one click apart. Pick whichever one you like; only the second is a contract.

The users who already pay are asking a different question. An r/UseMotion thread posted on July 11, 2026 is titled, plainly, “Does Motion still receive meaningful updates, or is the product stagnating?” One long-time user answered: “I don’t think it’s had any meaningful updates in years, and even ‘basic’ things like an API or MCP server don’t seem to be forthcoming.” Another: “the product seems stagnant, with no communication from the team and inactive social media accounts.” A third, who says they onboarded their whole team, was harsher: “They haven’t made any noticeable improvements or fixes to major bugs in almost a year… We’re moving to Asana now and I’m going to shout from the rooftops at what a poorly run company they are. The dissent in that thread is worth quoting too. One business user said a static app suits them fine, because “not every piece of software needs to constantly and radically evolve.” Fair. But a subscription that costs $588 a year at the solo monthly rate and then stops moving is a different purchase from the one the homepage is selling.

Third-party scores land where you’d expect for a product people love and resent at once: 3.8 out of 5 from 574 Trustpilot reviews and 4.1 out of 5 from 157 G2 reviews. Both come from Google’s indexed snippets, because Trustpilot returned a 403 to our fetch, so we’ve flagged them for an in-browser check rather than dress them up as our own read.

Motion pricing (verified July 29, 2026)

There is no free plan. There are two tiers, each carrying four different prices: individual or team, monthly or annual.

Read that table again, because it contains the strangest pricing decision in the category: buying Motion alone costs more than buying it with a colleague. One person on monthly Pro AI pays $49. Two people on monthly Pro AI pay $29 each. The solo freelancer, the exact persona every Motion review gets written for, is charged a 69% premium for the privilege of not having a team.

Business AI adds capacity planning, Gantt views, time tracking, dashboards, permissions and priority support. If you’re one person, it adds nothing you’ll use.

Then there’s the credit meter. Pro AI includes 7,500 credits per seat per month and overage runs 25 cents per 100, so the sticker is a floor rather than a ceiling for anyone leaning on the AI chat and writing tools. The company doesn’t publish what a typical month consumes. Neither can we, until we’ve metered one.

What Motion actually does well

Deadline-aware auto-scheduling. ✔️ The core engine still earns its reputation. Tasks carry deadlines, durations and priorities; it fits them into the gaps and re-plans when a meeting eats your afternoon.

✔️ Project structure with dependencies is the feature people miss most after they leave. One Redditor weighing a move to Reclaim wrote that what he’d mourn was “the project management with dependencies… I quite like how specific I can get with Motion projects.” (r/UseMotion)

✔️ And it replaces four apps with one. Calendar, tasks, projects, docs, meeting notes and booking links live together, with iOS, Android and desktop apps on both tiers. For a service business running client work, that consolidation is the actual sell, not the AI branding stuck on top of it.

Where Motion falls short

Solo buyers pay the most. ❌ $49/month for one person versus $29 a seat for two. No tool should price loneliness at a premium.

❌ The refund policy is unusually blunt. Motion’s help centre and its terms both state: “Purchases are non-refundable; Motion is not obligated to refund any payments, but may do so at its sole discretion.” The terms add that your free trial “lasts exactly 24 hours per day of the trial duration”, that you must cancel before it ends to avoid a charge, and that cancelling a trial “may be effective immediately”, which means cancelling early can cost you the days you had left. ❌ Users allege worse, and we can’t confirm it. A thread posted March 18, 2026 is titled “Warning: Motion will charge you if you sign up for a free trial and cancel before the trial period ends”. It is short — four comments — but it is the highest-scoring post of the r/UseMotion threads we read (18 points, 96% upvoted). In it, one user in Germany reports a pending credit-card chargeback; another reports being billed $400 for a plan they say they cancelled a year or two earlier and could not reach anyone about. (r/UseMotion) We did not reproduce the behaviour and the terms don’t describe it, so we won’t state it as fact. It still belongs in your decision, because the written refund policy gives you nothing to fall back on if it happens to you.

The stagnation problem. ❌ No API. No MCP server. A subreddit whose recent threads include “What did you switch to after Motion?”, “Motion alternatives” and “Wonderly — the new Motion product?” Whether the team has genuinely moved on is a community belief we could not verify from any company statement. The belief itself is costing the company renewals in public. On the API complaint specifically, it’s worth knowing that Akiflow ships an MCP connector today on a $19/month plan.

❌ Support comes up in every thread. Its own users describe “Escalated issues get generic responses with no real resolution” and, from a different thread, “They also do not answer mail sent more than 6 months ago.” A consultancy posting as WorkLoopie said it took Motion “3 weeks before they were able to attempt to fix the bug” for a client, then pitched them the enterprise tier, and signed off: “we no longer recommend them as part of a tech stack.” (r/UseMotion, Oct 2025 · r/UseMotion, Jul 2026)

Who should skip Motion

Skip it if you’re buying one seat on monthly billing, because that is the customer this vendor charges the most. Skip it if a refund matters, because the written policy says you don’t get one. Skip it if you want to pipe tasks in programmatically; there’s no API. And skip it if the honest diagnosis is that you don’t need smarter scheduling at all. One ex-user put that better than we can: “motion was impressive, but i spent too much time managing the system instead of following it.” (r/UseMotion)

Motion alternatives, by job

The honest one-liners:

• Choose Reclaim if auto-scheduling was the only reason you looked at Motion. It’s the destination ex-Motion users name most, it starts free, and one switcher said flatly that Reclaim “offers more at a cheaper price” (r/UseMotion). Reclaim also runs a standing 20%-off-for-six-months discount for people switching from Motion, verified on its pricing page Jul 29, 2026. One caveat, and it’s a live one: an r/UseMotion commenter reports that Reclaim 2.0 drops auto-rescheduling for tasks. Reclaim’s own pages don’t mention it and we’ve flagged it (verify). • Pick Sunsama if reshuffling stresses you more than it helps. As one switcher put it: “motion felt smarter, sunsama felt calmer” (r/UseMotion). Sunsama also won’t take your card until the 14-day trial is over, which is the opposite of the complaint that dominates r/UseMotion. See the Sunsama review.
• Choose Akiflow for capture speed and manual control. It has no auto-scheduling at all, which one ex-user described as “a relief after Motion kept reshuffling everything” (r/UseMotion). It does ship an AI assistant and an MCP connector on the $19 plan, so “no AI” is the wrong reason to pick it.
• Stay on Motion only if you need dependencies between auto-scheduled tasks. Nobody else does that yet.

Why you can trust this Motion review

We hold no product in this category and take no placement money. We read Motion’s live pricing page, terms and cancellation article on July 29, 2026 and quoted them verbatim; worked through four r/UseMotion threads comment by comment, discounting posts from founders of rival tools; and checked Reclaim’s, Sunsama’s and Akiflow’s prices on their own pages so the comparison isn’t secondhand. Motion still owns the one trick nobody has copied: auto-scheduling that understands dependencies. You are buying that trick from a company that charges solo users a premium, advertises “risk free” while its terms refund nothing, and whose most active users spent this month asking each other whether anyone is still building the thing. Buy it as a team, annually, or don’t buy it.
