Midjourney Review: The Art Direction Is Real. The Billing Is Not Forgiven.

Midjourney is worth it if you want images with a point of view — composition, light and grain that no free generator matches — and you can live with $10 to $120 a month, no free trial, and no refund on an annual prepay. Skip it if you need the model to follow your prompt exactly, hold a character across scenes, or spell a word inside the picture; Google’s Nano Banana Pro does all three better and starts at $0.

This Midjourney review is consensus-scored and document-verified, not first-hand-tested. On August 12, 2026 we read the price table off Midjourney’s own billing docs, confirmed it publishes no pricing page, pulled its live Trustpilot rating, star distribution and twenty most recent reviews, and read three Reddit threads comment by comment. We ran no bake-off; where a claim needs a screenshot we don’t have, we say so.

Midjourney pricing: what each plan actually costs (verified August 12, 2026)

Midjourney has no pricing page. midjourney.com/pricing and midjourney.com/plans both return the site’s 404 shell: “This page has not been /imagine’d yet.” The prices live in a billing-docs article, where everything below was read on August 12, 2026.

Extra fast GPU time is $4 an hour on every tier. The terms compound: those hours expire in 60 days, they’re non-refundable, and if your subscription lapses you can’t use hours you already paid for. Three more clauses matter before you expense this:

There is no free trial. Not in Discord, not on the web. Midjourney’s docs say so in one sentence; the only trial that exists sits inside the separate niji·journey mobile app. Every rival here has a free tier. Midjourney charges at the door.

Privacy is a $60 feature. Stealth Mode, which keeps your generations out of the public feed, is Pro and Mega only. On Basic and Standard everything you make is visible to everyone, so client work under NDA has a $60 floor, not a $10 one.

Companies over $1m in gross annual revenue must be on Pro or Mega, per the commercial terms. There are no non-profit or education discounts. And the 20% annual saving is a year paid upfront: cancelling mid-term stops the renewal rather than refunding the balance.

Is Midjourney worth it?

Yes, for a narrower group of people than in 2023, and for exactly one reason.

Midjourney has taste. It holds opinions about composition, colour and light and applies them whether you asked or not. Rivals spent two years getting better at doing what you said; Midjourney spent them getting better at doing what you’d have said if you’d thought of it.

The r/midjourney thread “Why is Midjourney still worth it?”, posted May 30, 2026, is the cleanest read on where the line falls. Its top answer isn’t a defence of quality. It’s a workflow: “The artists I follow lean heavily into Midjourney. Moodboards are really powerful. Also, the lines blur. I often reprocess Midjourney output in nanobanana, stable diffusion etc., but it’s a very powerful tool in the kit.” (r/midjourney)

“In the kit” recurs down the whole thread. Nobody argues it’s the only tool you need, only that it’s the one producing something worth finishing. A user with a three-year archive named the real moat, which is switching cost: “NOTHING can do the sort of artist styling that Midjourney does… these other generators all produce more ‘digital’ graphic design/photo looking stuff.” The dissent is about money, not pictures: “I had it for over a year and couldn’t justify the cost anymore. They’ve been riding on their early success.”

One flag, since we read both threads account by account: five accounts push the same third-party upscaler, and three of them carry the near-identical clause “pair it with Magnific for upscaling.” All three are recent, low-ranked comments. We can’t prove intent, so we won’t call it paid promotion. But a phrase repeating verbatim across accounts is a pattern, and we’d rather name it than launder it into “the community recommends.”

What Midjourney does well

Aesthetics nothing else matches. ✔️ The whole product, and uncontested. “MidJourney outpaces everything else when it comes to blending visual concepts to discover something new. It seems to understand composition, color theory, and textural cues,” wrote one user comparing it against Stable Diffusion, Fooocus, Nano Banana and ChatGPT.

Style control that compounds. ✔️ --sref, Omni Reference, moodboards and personalization profiles let a heavy user build a private visual signature over months. V8.2, shipped July 25, 2026, aimed squarely at this: it promises personalization that “‘understand[s]’ your personal taste much better” for users with a long ratings history.

Unlimited generation from $30, and still shipping. ✔️ Relax mode on Standard and up is uncapped, so past the entry tier the marginal cost of exploring is zero. And whatever else is wrong here, a July 2026 model release on a public changelog means nobody has abandoned this thing.

Where Midjourney falls short

Prompt adherence is the weak spot, and users are blunt. ❌ “When it comes to actually following a prompt, Midjourney is still weak,” wrote a Standard subscriber of almost two years, explaining a downgrade to Basic. Another: “Midjourney would do what Midjourney wants… the results are not what you want.” Bring a specific brief and you’ll fight it.

Character consistency isn’t solved. ❌ In the “V8 improvements?” thread from late July 2026, a user who had left for Nano Banana asked directly whether V8 fixed prompt adherence and character stability, then read the replies and concluded: “So short answer, no, not any better at character stability.” (r/midjourney) Omni Reference helps. It doesn’t close the gap.

The Trustpilot score is 1.6 out of 5 across 366 reviews, verified live August 12, 2026, and “Bad” in Trustpilot’s own words. ❌ Seventy-seven percent of those reviews are one star. Ten percent are five. G2 shows 4.4 across 102 reviews (relayed from G2’s own search snippets; G2 blocked our fetch twice). That split is the most useful fact here: G2 asks about capability, which is excellent. Trustpilot collects unprompted complaints about being a customer: charges taken after cancellation, a cancel button that didn’t work, suspended accounts, refunds refused because you’d used the GPU time you were complaining about, support that never replies. A four-year subscriber who calls himself a super user wrote in July 2026 that support is “staffed by people who say that they are volunteering,” and “if you have a problem with anything don’t write to them because they will never reply.”

Basic is a trap plan. ❌ 200 minutes of fast time, no relax mode, and no roll-over of what you don’t spend. Midjourney’s own docs cost a four-image SD prompt at 0.8 minutes, so $10 buys somewhere near 250 prompts; daily users run dry mid-month and the fix is a $4/hr top-up or a jump to $30. Add no free trial and no meaningful refund, and you pay before you see anything, which is the reverse of the category norm.

Who should skip Midjourney

Skip it if your work has a spec. Product shots with exact copy, storyboards where a named character must be identical in frame 40, infographics, anything with words in the picture. One r/midjourney regular says it best: “Midjourney is a collaboration tool. If you’re looking for something specific, you’re using the wrong tool.”

Skip it if you want to try before you buy. There is no free tier. Start on Gemini, ChatGPT or Firefly, all free, and come here once you know you need an aesthetic rather than an image.

Skip it if the annual price is a stretch. The 20% discount takes a full year upfront, and cancelling mid-term stops the renewal rather than refunding the balance. If $288 is a real decision, pay monthly and keep the exit. And skip the $10 tier entirely if you generate daily, because it has no relax mode.

Midjourney alternatives, by job

No image generator wins every job, and most working users run two.

Honest about the dates: only Ideogram and Midjourney were re-read today. The other three carry the August 6, 2026 stamp from our image-generator hub’s pass, which is also where those skip-lines come from, and Adobe’s promotional tiers expire August 26.

The switch that actually happens is Midjourney to Nano Banana Pro, and the reason is never picture quality. It’s this, from the V8 thread: “MJ creates amazing images no other platform can create, but sadly I can’t justify the cost when Nano Banana is virtually free and GPT is so good for the basic plan.” Free beats beautiful for most buyers. It doesn’t beat beautiful for people whose output is the product.

How we scored this Midjourney review

We hold no position in this category, take no placement money, and no vendor saw a draft. Every price here came off Midjourney’s own billing docs rather than a blog, and every Reddit quote was read in the thread it came from, including the repeated-phrasing pattern we flagged instead of quoting past.

What we have not done: run a controlled prompt bake-off, or subscribe and test the cancellation flow. Both are queued as artifacts and will land here before this page is final. The one number we couldn’t fetch ourselves is G2’s 4.4 across 102 reviews; G2 returned 403 twice, so it’s relayed from G2’s own snippet and labelled that way everywhere. Everything around the pictures is worse than the pictures: no trial, privacy behind a $60 paywall, an annual prepay that doesn’t refund, top-up hours that expire, and a Trustpilot page where 77% of reviewers gave one star. That’s the trade, and $10 is a fair price to find out.

Buy Standard if the way it looks is the reason anyone hires you. Buy nothing and start on Gemini if you just need a picture.
