Skip it if you want frontier image quality, if you need to know what a picture costs before you make one, or if you’re on the free plan and need to own what you generate.

This Leonardo AI review is consensus-scored and document-verified, not first-hand-tested. We read every price and plan limit off leonardo.ai’s own pricing page on August 12, 2026, pulled its live Trustpilot distribution the same day, read its terms answers on image ownership and token accounting, and worked through user reports on Reddit and Trustpilot. Where a number needs our own test to confirm, we say so and queue the screenshot.

Is Leonardo AI worth it?

At $0, almost always. At $60, only if you can answer a question Leonardo won’t answer for you.

The free plan hands out 150 fast tokens a day. That’s a real allowance, not a teaser: enough to learn the interface, test the models and decide. Paid tiers replace the daily drip with a monthly pool of 8,500 tokens on Essential, 25,000 on Premium, 60,000 on Ultimate (all verified Aug 12, 2026). Unused tokens now roll into a Rollover Bank capped at three times your monthly grant: 25,500, 75,000 and 180,000 respectively (verified Aug 12, 2026). That’s a genuine improvement, and it’s the one thing Trustpilot reviewers volunteer without being asked. “Was pleased to learn that now monthly credits roll over into next month rather than vanishing,” wrote one user in August 2026 (Trustpilot).

Here’s the problem. Leonardo’s own pricing page states that “a single token doesn’t correspond to a specific image size or a specific action” and that the cost “adjusts based on the complexity and computational requirements of the task.” So 8,500 tokens is 8,500 of something. The vendor is explicit that it will not tell you how many pictures that is.

That vagueness is where the buyer’s regret lives, and users find it fast. On r/generativeAI in May 2026, someone weighing the lowest paid tier asked how much credit packs really cost, “the ai is very vague about it.” Another user gave him the only sane answer: “Leonardo is a reasonable ‘getting started’ pick, but I’d be careful judging it from the subscription price alone. Video generation burns credits much faster than still images, so the real question is: how many failed/okay generations do you need before one usable clip?” (r/generativeAI) It’s a thin thread, twelve comments and zero net upvotes, so treat it as one informed opinion rather than a verdict. It is still the right question, and it’s the question the pricing page is built to avoid.

One caveat we won’t paper over. That pricing page carries a “Pay Yearly / Up to 20% off / Pay Monthly” switch, and only one set of numbers ever rendered for us. The figures above are the ones the page shows by default. If you pay month to month, the vendor’s own discount badge implies you’ll pay more. Leonardo just never printed how much anywhere we could read it, so neither will we. Check the toggle before you subscribe.

What Leonardo does well

Trainable personal models are the reason to pay. Ten a month on Essential, twenty on Premium, fifty on Ultimate (verified Aug 12, 2026). Upload 10–20 images, get back a model that reproduces a style, a character or a product. If you need three hundred assets that look like they came out of the same studio, this is the feature you’re buying, and almost nothing else at $12 offers it.

One subscription also covers everyone else’s models. Leonardo advertises GPT-Image-1, Nano Banana Pro, Flux Kontext, Ideogram, Seedream, Veo 3.1, Sora 2, Kling and LTX-2 running inside the app next to its own Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism and Phoenix. We could not re-confirm that full roster on the pricing page itself, so read it as the vendor’s claim (verify). If it holds, one bill replaces four or five separate subscriptions, and that is worth real money.

The free tier is honest work. 150 tokens a day, every day, no card (verified Aug 12, 2026). Rivals meter their free plans into uselessness. Leonardo’s lets you form an opinion before you spend anything, which is a strange thing to have to praise.

Support is the other real strength, and the numbers are lopsided in its favour: 4.6 out of 5 across 1,389 Trustpilot reviews, 85% of them five-star, 726 posted in the past twelve months, and 74% of negative reviews answered by the company (all verified Aug 12, 2026). G2’s page shows 4.5 out of 5 with 67% five-star, and CNET scored it 7/10. Read the recent five-star write-ups, though, and something turns up that complicates the whole number. That’s the next section.

Paid users own their output. Leonardo’s pricing-page FAQ is unambiguous: paid subscribers keep full ownership, copyright and IP in what they generate. On security the company calls itself “fully SOC 2 Type I and Type II accredited.” That is its own wording, on its own privacy policy. Treat it as a vendor claim, not an audit anyone outside Leonardo has seen.

Where Leonardo AI falls short

You cannot price an image before you make it. This is the central criticism, and it’s the vendor’s own design rather than an oversight. Tokens float with GPU load, video costs multiples of stills, and the third-party models cost whatever the third party charges. Budgeting is a post-hoc activity.

Then there’s what “unlimited” actually buys, which is not the models you probably came for. Relaxed generation is the mode that keeps you working after your tokens hit zero, and Leonardo names exactly which models qualify: Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism, Phoenix 0.9 and 1.0, Motion 1.0, Motion 2.0 and 2.0 Fast, Hailuo 2.3 and 2.3 Fast, and Wan 2.6 (verified Aug 12, 2026). Read that list for what it leaves out. GPT-Image-1, Nano Banana Pro, Flux Kontext, Ideogram, Seedream, Veo 3.1, Sora 2 and Kling burn tokens on every plan, every time. And Essential gets no relaxed tier at all: at $12 a month, zero tokens means stop.

The third problem is the one the rating hides. Those five-star reviews are largely about rescue, not about the product. The same support first names recur down the Trustpilot page — Mark, Fin, Jefren, Anna — restoring rollover tokens that had vanished, reversing a mistaken charge, saving one user’s 100,000 tokens (Trustpilot, August 2026, read Aug 12). A score built on excellent recovery is still a score built on things going wrong, and Trustpilot’s own AI summary of 711 reviews concedes the point in softer language: billing and token management “can sometimes be confusing.” The distribution is barbell-shaped too: 85% five-star, 10% one-star, almost nothing in between. One reviewer in August 2026 put the friction plainly: “My only disappointment is that the chatbot initially told me I would keep the 150 daily tokens even with a paid subscription, which turned out to be incorrect.” (Trustpilot) Leonardo replied that the daily tokens come back only once your subscription balance drops below 150. Accurate, and precisely the kind of rule you need a support ticket to discover.

The free tier costs you your rights. Leonardo’s own words: free-tier users get a non-exclusive, royalty-free commercial licence, but Leonardo “holds rights to use, reproduce, modify, and distribute any images you create.” The plan table confirms the other half: free accounts get “Public” creations access, and private generation starts at $12 (verified Aug 12, 2026). It’s a trade most people accept without ever reading it.

Model quality also trails the frontier. Leonardo’s in-house models are good; the consensus across published reviewer scores and user threads is that they are not Nano Banana Pro or Midjourney, particularly on skin and hands. Who should skip Leonardo AI

Skip it if you own a decent GPU. When someone asked r/StableDiffusion this exact question, three of the four answers said no, and the top-voted one said why: “Anything you can do in Leonardo, you can do locally with ComfyUI… If the style isn’t a draw for you and you have the hardware to run SD models locally, I don’t see a compelling reason to subscribe.” (r/StableDiffusion, July 2024). That thread is old and small, four comments in total, and Leonardo’s model roster has grown a lot since. The hardware argument hasn’t moved an inch.

Skip it if you generate a handful of images a month. The free tier covers you and paying is a donation. Skip it if you need one perfect hero image rather than three hundred consistent ones. And skip the free tier specifically if the output is going anywhere commercial that matters, because public-by-default plus vendor-retained rights is not a footnote.

Leonardo AI alternatives
