Coursera is the priciest self-paced option, but the $399 buys graded Professional Certificates from Google, IBM and university partners: credentials that show up on a résumé, not just a completion badge. Coursera’s own page claims teams see 25% more productivity and 38% higher retention, with 97% engagement in non-mandatory training. Those are vendor figures; treat them as marketing, not audit.
Udemy’s $360 seat opens the widest catalog and its newer AI Role Play simulations. Worth knowing before you call sales: Udemy’s dedicated AI plans carry seat minimums: the AI Readiness collection needs 100 seats, the AI Growth collection needs 21. The general Team Plan does not, which is why small teams usually start there.
DataCamp is the cheapest door in at about $168 a seat, and it’s the sharpest choice if your “AI training” really means data, Python, SQL and analytics literacy rather than general ChatGPT fluency. It’s used by 80% of the Fortune 1000, per DataCamp.
Above roughly 20–100 seats, all three push you toward Enterprise pricing, which is quote-only and negotiable: SSO, LMS integration, custom paths, and a discount that scales with volume. What to actually teach, by role
Buying seats is easy. Deciding what each group needs is where most programs go vague and then go nowhere. Split the workforce into three tiers and the curriculum writes itself.
Everyone (AI literacy). What a large language model is and isn’t, how to prompt for reliable output, where hallucination and data-privacy risk live, and your company’s AI-use policy. Two to four hours. This is the layer that stops people pasting client data into a public chatbot. Generative AI training at this tier is mostly behavior change, not technical skill.
Power users (applied AI). Marketers, analysts, ops, support, HR: the people who can save real hours if they get fluent. This is prompt engineering done properly, plus automation of the repetitive parts of their actual job. Eight to twenty hours, ideally role-specific. Every vendor will quote a productivity percentage. Ignore them and build your own number, because a defensible ROI figure is what gets next year’s budget approved.
The honest formula has four inputs:
- Cost. Seats plus workshop fees plus the hours employees spend in training, valued at their loaded hourly rate. That last term is the one buyers forget, and it’s often the biggest.
- Adoption. Not seats purchased. Seats used. Track weekly active learners and, more importantly, weekly active appliers (people using AI in real work). A program at 20% adoption is a rounding error no matter how good the content is.
