Prime Intellect has acquired Moondream, the small team behind an open model that reads images and can point at objects in photos. Founders Vik Korrapati and Jay Allen will run inference (serving trained models to users) and push Prime Intellect’s work on vision and computer use.
Prime Intellect’s blog post is headed “joining”, but its first sentence says acquired. No price or terms were disclosed, and it does not say whether anyone besides the two founders is moving. For current users: Moondream stays as a brand, Moondream 3.1 now runs on Prime Intellect’s hosting service, and Moondream Cloud customers get Prime credits within days. Whether future Moondream models will ship with open weights goes unanswered.
Moondream 3.1 is said to run 24x faster than the open model closest to it in accuracy. That figure comes from the two companies’ own unpublished measurements, with no outside test behind it.
Moondream was already a Prime customer, so this is a supplier absorbing a client. One deal is not a trend, but our observation is that small model teams keep landing inside infrastructure companies. Anyone building on Moondream’s weights should keep a copy of the current release.
