OpenAI’s first piece of consumer hardware is coming into sharper focus, though the timeline keeps sliding. According to Bloomberg, the device is donut-shaped, about as large as a hockey puck, and will carry a price tag above $300. The Decoder reports the unit has no screen, and that its parts move on their own, a way of signaling that it is listening or responding rather than sitting inert like a stationary smart speaker.
The hardware also packs microphones, a camera array, and status lights, runs on battery power, and stays compact enough to hold in one hand. Design studio LoveFrom, led by former Apple designer Jony Ive, is credited as a co-designer. OpenAI has not confirmed these specifications itself: the 2027 ship date comes from Bloomberg and The Decoder’s reporting, not from any OpenAI announcement.
That timeline is a long runway for a device already this heavily leaked. Fitting parts that move inside a puck-sized shell is as much a manufacturing puzzle as an AI one, separate from whatever software OpenAI builds to run on it.
