Elon Musk says the agent app from his own AI business will hand some of its work to models built by competitors, including Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5. The whole announcement is one post on X from Wednesday, and nothing in it has been shown to work.
Musk wrote: “Going forward, SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs. Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome.” The Next Web, which reported the post, says it applies to Grok Bot, the agent app from SpaceXAI, the AI unit Musk has merged into SpaceX. It launched in August, and each Bot gets a computer and can run several jobs at once.
The post names no routing rules. The post also does not say whether the three companies have agreed to anything, what the calls will cost, or when any of this starts.
The interesting part is who is saying it. Musk founded xAI in 2023 to take on OpenAI, and the Grok models have cost him a great deal of computing power. A company that sold itself on its own frontier models now says it will use whichever model does the job best. That is a routing decision, and Musk frames it as one, but it tells you where an agent product keeps its value. The Bot’s computer, its task handling and its team features are what the customer touches. The model behind a given step can be swapped.
The timing is crowded. The Next Web notes that users reported trouble reaching Grok on mobile and web a day earlier, according to City AM, and that SpaceXAI gave no official cause. The source does not link the two. The report adds that Musk also said this week SpaceXAI will become SpaceXSI.
Since late September, Grok Bot has let teams publish a shared Bot for colleagues to use in the app or Slack, according to its product changelog. Rivals include Instinct and Meta’s Muse. Reportedly, 3 million people now use Muse every week. Business Insider reported Tuesday that some early adopters of such agents have removed them, citing privacy. One of them said he keeps using Grok Bot but never linked it to his email.
That last detail sits awkwardly next to the new plan. Sending a task to an outside model usually means sending the task’s data with it, and the post does not say what would leave SpaceX’s systems. Until SpaceXAI publishes which jobs go to which model and what travels with them, a team that connects Grok Bot to company accounts is trusting a routing table it cannot see.
