Google has added a feature called Sheets canvas that lets Gemini generate a visual, editable layer on top of any spreadsheet without the user writing a single formula. The feature, detailed by TestingCatalog, opens through a side panel: a user selects “Create canvas,” describes the result in plain language, and Gemini assembles a layout pulled from the sheet’s existing rows and columns.
That layout is not a snapshot. Edits made inside the canvas or inside the source sheet sync in both directions, and because the canvas lives as its own tab, it can be shared with collaborators the same way a normal sheet is. Follow-up prompts can restructure the layout, change its arrangement, or add new functionality, closer to iterating with a chatbot than editing cells by hand.
The spreadsheet is arguably the most widely deployed programming environment in business. Millions of non-engineers already encode logic into rows and columns through formulas, pivot tables, and conditional formatting, but very few of them ever turn that logic into a standalone tool with its own views, filters, and buttons. Sheets canvas targets exactly that gap. Google’s own examples, students converting assignment lists into progress trackers, fantasy football players building roster comparison views, wedding planners turning RSVP lists into seating charts, describe people who have data and a clear use case but no appetite for app development.
That audience is also who this quietly displaces: the small internal tools and one-off dashboards that would otherwise cost a developer’s afternoon, a no-code builder subscription, or a separate reporting product bolted onto the same underlying data. If Sheets canvas holds up in practice, it competes less with any single rival product than with that entire category of disposable, single-purpose software.
The two-way sync is also where the open question sits. Google says a canvas stays connected to its source sheet as values change, but the announcement does not address what happens when a collaborator changes the sheet’s shape rather than its contents: a new column inserted, a header renamed, a row deleted that a layout element depended on. An interface generated around specific fields either has to rebuild itself or degrade gracefully when the structure underneath it moves, and nothing in TestingCatalog’s report says which behavior Sheets canvas has.
Sheets canvas is rolling out now, worldwide, in English, open to subscribers on Google’s AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. Google has also begun extending it to Workspace customers on Business plans and on Enterprise Standard and Plus plans, along with buyers of Google’s Education-tier AI Pro add-on. Teams weighing internal dashboard tools should test how a canvas behaves after a routine schema change before trusting it with anything shared past a single spreadsheet owner.
