Cursor has launched Router, a system built into its coding editor that automatically chooses which underlying model handles each task rather than sending every request to a single default. The company says the approach delivers frontier-quality output at 60 percent lower cost than routing everything to one model. That claim comes entirely from Cursor’s own early-access program, not an independent test.

Router is live now across every Cursor surface for customers on Teams and Enterprise plans, with no separate opt-in required beyond an admin enabling it for the team. Early-access customers reported no drop-off in output quality and a lower cost per finished commit compared with sending all requests to Opus 4.8, according to Cursor. Those figures measure Cursor’s router against Cursor’s own prior default, not against a rival product or an outside benchmark, and the company has not published sample size, task mix, or methodology.

Router’s launch makes it the second model-routing product to surface this week; Ramp built its own internal router to steer spending across AI vendors before locking into a single model contract. Taken together, the two moves point to routing becoming a product layer of its own, sitting above individual models rather than inside one. As frontier models converge toward similar benchmark scores, the choice of which model answers which request starts to matter more than which lab built the model. The value migrates from owning the best model to owning the logic that decides when a cheaper one will do, and that logic is exactly what a coding tool sitting between the developer and the API is positioned to capture.

The admin controls attached to Router extend well past picking a smart default. Team admins can allow or block specific models outright, set a default per team, and disable select optimization modes for individual users. Marketed as a quality feature, those controls function mainly as governance and budget levers: a way for an engineering lead to keep the most expensive model off the table for routine work or exclude a vendor entirely, regardless of which model actually performs best on a given task.

For engineering teams already on Cursor’s Teams or Enterprise tier, the 60 percent figure is worth treating as a hypothesis rather than a settled fact until it is checked against an actual codebase; cost per commit varies enough by task type that Cursor’s aggregate number may not transfer directly. The allow/block list is worth configuring either way, since it caps exposure to a runaway model bill even if the routing-quality claims turn out to be optimistic once outside teams start publishing their own numbers.
