Anthropic has put Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as a public beta available to subscribers on its paid plans. The company announced it on claude.com on 6 October 2026. Free users are left out, and a beta label means features can still change and rough edges are expected. Anthropic does not describe any reliability commitment in the announcement.
The notable change is that Claude works on the live file rather than a copy. It opens in a sidebar, reads the open document, sheet or deck, sees what you have selected, and edits in place. Until now, the usual routine was to paste text into a chat, wait for a reply and paste it back, losing formatting along the way. Anthropic says a one-sentence correction or a heading restyle leaves the rest of the formatting untouched.
What it can do differs by app. In Docs, small fixes happen directly and larger rewrites arrive as suggestion cards that highlight the affected passage for you to accept or reject. In Sheets, Claude writes formulas, builds pivot tables and charts, adds tabs, and for joins or data cleaning can run the numbers in Python and put the result back in the sheet. In Slides, it builds slides from the deck’s own layouts and checks for overlapping elements, text running off the slide and hard-to-read type.
Control sits with the user. Out of the box, in a mode called “Ask before edits,” every change shows up as an approval card and Claude pauses until you say yes. An “Accept all edits” mode lets it work through a task without stopping. For anyone handing over a shared budget or a client deck, the default is the setting to leave alone.
A write-capable assistant is a bigger commitment than one that only reads, and the announcement is quiet on the specifics. It does not list the Google permissions the add-on requests, does not say what happens to document contents after processing, and does not say whether files are used for training. The one access statement concerns the separate connectors, and it says Claude can reach only what your existing Google sharing already lets you reach. Whether the sidebar follows the same rule is not spelled out.
Enterprise customers get more. Anthropic says its Enterprise controls (audit export through OpenTelemetry, customer-managed encryption keys and the Compliance API) carry over to the add-on, which gives security teams a record of what Claude did. Team and Enterprise plans have an extra gate: an owner or primary owner must switch on the connectors before anyone can use them. Admins can deploy the add-on across a whole domain, or to chosen groups, from Google’s admin console.
A second feature runs the opposite way. Separate connectors for the three apps, also in beta, let you begin in a Claude chat instead, share a link or request something new, and have Claude create and edit Google files from there. Anthropic suggests that route for brand-new files or work touching several documents. Once signed in, the sidebar carries your usual models, connectors and skills, so a deck can draw on Salesforce records and call notes from Drive.
Anthropic offers no benchmark, error rate or user figures, so usefulness is untested outside its own examples. Install is through the Google Workspace Marketplace, then Extensions, Claude, Open Claude. An admin evaluating it should get written answers on data retention and permission scopes from Anthropic before approving it for a whole domain.
