It says Anthropic is seeking engineers with chip design experience for the silicon team, and it quotes no named executive or team lead behind the effort. The article does not say whether the goal is inference hardware, training hardware, or both, and it does not say when a chip, if one is ever built, would tape out.
The piece adds one earlier data point: The Information reported last month that Anthropic had approached Samsung as a possible chip manufacturing partner. TechCrunch frames that as a separate, earlier report rather than proof that Samsung is now tied to this hiring push, and neither article names a foundry attached to a finished design.
Anthropic’s existing compute relationships give the hiring some shape. The company has struck separate hardware access agreements covering AWS, Google, Nvidia and AMD chips, according to TechCrunch, and the silicon team would sit alongside those arrangements rather than replace them, at least for now.

Building custom silicon typically runs several years and requires capital far beyond a hiring budget, and plenty of well-funded companies staff chip teams that never reach tape-out. Custom inference chips, the kind OpenAI’s Broadcom-built Jalapeño targets, are also a materially smaller undertaking than training silicon, which is what genuinely reduces dependence on Nvidia. For operators watching Anthropic’s cost structure, the hire to track is a chip architecture lead or head of silicon, not the current job posting.
