Accel is reportedly in talks to lead a $1 billion round for Thinking Machines, the AI lab Mira Murati founded after leaving OpenAI as chief technology officer, TechCrunch reported Thursday, citing The Information. The discussions reportedly value the company at roughly $40 billion, according to unnamed sources cited by The Information.

If completed, the round would value Thinking Machines below the $50 billion figure the startup reportedly sought last year, TechCrunch noted. The company’s annualized revenue run rate reportedly tops $100 million, according to a person with knowledge of its financials, making a $40 billion price an unusually high multiple. Thinking Machines’ prior fundraise, led by Andreessen Horowitz, raised $2 billion at a $12 billion valuation. Accel and Thinking Machines did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.

Watch whether the round actually closes at these reported terms before treating $40 billion as a settled number.
